Has It Happened Yet? Trying your first edible.

Updated: Jun 13, 2020

Sublime Brands Oatmeal Cookie

Roughly five minutes after a first-timer ingests an edible, I’m usually asked the oh so mysterious and interesting question, “so how long does it take to kick in?” While I once wanted to laugh at anyone for asking me AFTER the edible was eaten just why the hell would they ask that instead of just enjoying. I then remembered that I was there once. No one was there with enough knowledge to guide me through the feelings I would encounter.

The ways that I felt the moment that I realized that I didn't know what to expect. The anxious surges I felt shooting up up spine in anticipation of the worst. The sheer fear that maybe you won't be able to handle the high and shouldn't have eaten that whole damn cookie.

I was able to reconsider those questions over time and now feel like I should be that person to explain first and laugh later when it comes to this type of topic. No one should have to feel overwhelmed when faced with a marijuana edible.

So, when does it kick in? Okay, first off, you have to know the difference between CBD and THC. For the sake of this post, I will give you an extreme shortcut. CBD equals relaxing body effects and zero high. THC is highly psychoactive with some body relaxation, but not a lot. Now that you know that, understand that in edible form, these two have effects that are felt with much more force and potency upon activation than it would if you were to smoke a joint.

You still shouldn’t be discouraged, though. I personally adore edibles since they do tend to take care of my more severe pain as well as spark my creativity. They are also great for micro-dosing, something that I do daily as recommended by my MMJ physician. The downfall to edibles is that they take much longer to retreat from the body’s system and for some individuals this might be a problem - particularly if you have a job that requires high awareness. While I cannot give you the absolute ins and outs on edibles here, I will provide you a few tips that should help you to notice when a cannabis edible has kicked in after being consumed.

Tip Number One: You will begin to feel warm.

Where this happens first is different from person to person. Some report their arms or legs feel warm while others report a warm feeling in their chest and on their face. No matter where yours occurs, feeling a warming sensation is normal. Don’t. Freak. Out. When you do begin to experience that warm feeling, just get into a comfortable position and relax. Do not try to fight it as it will make you feel nauseous, especially if you are prone to motion sickness.

Tip Number Two: You will start thinking differently.

Now, here, is where all of the fun really start to kick in. You will have abstract thoughts. A lot of people who have never tried cannabis oftentimes really exaggerate what they expect to happen during this time and end up having a “bad trip”. By the way I have yet to experience that shit. I don’t know what kind of stuff they were smoking to induce these “trips”, but I have never experienced anything like that, and I do not know others who use medicinally and experienced that either.

Do not go into this with how you expect to feel. Let the the vibes take control and relax you.

I tend to notice that I am more creative in this stage. Tasks that weren’t so clear to me become manageable and things that I found to mentally taunt me are now pointless memories. I tend to overall feel refreshed and at peace in this state, and I am surprisingly analytical but not judgmental. I love it.

Tip Number Three: You will feel extra light.

Okay, fair warning. In case you skipped over everything else and dropped down here for some weird reason, I mentioned not fighting your high as it will cause motion sickness. I have experienced, and I’m sure others can as well, the feelings of floating or being weightless. While I have not and will not attempt weightless types of activities to test the feeling I have, I have noticed that the sensation itself can lead one to feel nauseous, especially your first time ingesting the cannabis.

Relax. This is just the cannabis taking over. Enjoy these moments by observing your thoughts without judgment during this time. Don't try to analyze in grave detail just what it is you are going through. Just simply enjoy the moment. You didn't sign up for that, anyway!

So now that you have these few tips, take everything slow. Try to remember this as best as you can and no doubt you will know when it’s finally happening!
